The Minnesota State Patrol launched an online accountability dashboard on our Department of Public Safety (DPS) website this week, giving the public easier access to data, policies and other information about the agency.

Our goal: promote accountability and build trust between the State Patrol and the people we serve.

The dashboard showcases the ways the Minnesota State Patrol holds its members accountable and maintains discipline, according to Col. Matt Langer, the chief of the State Patrol.

“This project was about both of those things, but most importantly, it offers Minnesotans insights into what the Minnesota State Patrol is doing on a daily basis," Langer said.

While all of this information is public, it has never before been proactively posted on our website.

In addition to everyday operations, the dashboard lays out all State Patrol policies and procedures, shows how the State Patrol holds troopers and staff accountable through excellence and integrity, and lays out the data for any use of force incidents, pursuits and training.

It includes information about each division and specialty unit, how they serve the public and the corresponding data related to the work they do. Among other information, you can find:

  • The time it takes for state patrol dispatchers to answer 97 percent of 911 calls (less than 10 seconds).
  • The number of complaints filed against troopers (27 in 2022 out of more than 437,000 contacts with the public).
  • The percentage of troopers' interactions with the public that resulted in the use of any force (.04 percent).

“Everything from impaired drivers to arresting dangerous individuals on a warrant to a motorist assist to a pedestrian on a freeway is accounted for in these numbers," Langer said.

The dashboard demonstrates our drive toward excellence — one of the core values of the Minnesota State Patrol.

“We are committed to serving everyone in this state with purpose and compassion," DPS Commissioner Bob Jacobson said. “When you look at this dashboard, you'll see the State Patrol's dedication to the people of Minnesota and keeping them safe."

The dashboard allows us to share the great work done by members of the State Patrol while also calling attention to areas where we are learning and improving.

“We anticipate that this will grow and change in the future as we respond to questions that might come up or discover areas the public is interested in," Langer said.
