Class D driver's license for new driver age 18 and older
Different requirements
New drivers age 18 and older have different requirements to get a license than new drivers under 18. There are also different rules for drivers age 19 and older.
If you are 18:
Eighteen-year-olds who are not previously licensed must hold an instruction permit for 180 days and pass a road test.
If you turn 19 before your 180 days are up, you will fall under the rules for a 19-year-old. For example: You already have 100 days of valid practice time on your instruction permit when you turn 19, then you follow the 19-year-old rules and you can take your road test.
If you are 19 or older:
Nineteen-year-olds must hold a permit for 90 days and pass a road test.
Note: Your license will expire on your 21st birthday.
The driver's license for drivers under age 21 will have a vertical orientation and a red banner showing the date the driver will turn 21. The driver's license for drivers over age 21 is horizontal and has no red banner.

ADA accommodations
DVS offers accommodations for testing. If you need special accommodations, please visit our ADA accommodations page.
Out of state driving practice
If all or part of the driving experience was in a state other than Minnesota, you need to present the out of state permit or a certified driving record from that state.
Winter road testing
Road test appointments during the winter months may be delayed until streets are passable and testing areas are cleared. If a vehicle gets stuck during a road test, the test cannot be completed, and it will result in a failed road test attempt. It is the customer's responsibility to obtain any towing services.
