Vehicle registration renewal

​Vehicle registration expires each year and must be renewed. Your registration card and license plate will provide the month of expiration. The registration expires the last day of the month. You may renew your registration in person, online or through the mail. 

In person

To renew your registration in person, find an office to locate your nearest deputy registrar.

Online 

Vehicles that have a registered gross weight of less than 55,000 pounds are eligible for online renewal. This includes:

  • Passenger vehicles (cars and trucks)
  • Motorcycles and mopeds
  • Recreational vehicles and trailers
  • Commercial vehicles and trailers

Your vehicle registration must either be expiring soon (within 6 months) or have expired recently (less than 10 months ago) to be eligible for online renewal.

You will need the following information to renew online:

  • Plate number
  • The last three digits of the VIN
  • Current insurance information (company name, policy number and date of expiration)
  • Bank account or credit card information

By mail

If you are unable to visit a deputy registrar office in person, mail the completed renewal notice and fees to Driver and Vehichle Services. Use the envelope enclosed with your renewal notice.

Duplicate registration plates and stickers 

When license plates or registration stickers are lost, stolen or defaced, replacement stickers can be issued at any deputy registrar office (fees may apply). You may also mail an application for duplicate plate or stickers with the appropriate fees to 445 Minnesota St., St. Paul, MN 55101-5187.
