The Minnesota School Safety Center offers a School Based Emergency Management Program (SBEM) certificate of completion program for school officials who are tasked with school safety responsibilities. Through the combination of selected online courses, a two-day in person training and completion of two elective opportunities, participants are provided with information on national and state best practices. This learning opportunity is designed to provide a foundation in school-based emergency management. Additionally, this curriculum serves as a conduit to resources for school safety professionals in: physical security, intervention/prevention, and emergency preparedness planning. School safety officials are trained to lead the development and implementation of school safety practices in order to provide safe educational environments.

While sole representation from an agency is beneficial, there is additional value in completing the curriculum and attending the in-person training as a team. Up to three individuals from any one district or school will be accepted into the program. Each interested individual will need to complete the application.

Curriculum completion is estimated at 27 hours and participants will receive 20.75 CEU credits from Board of School Administrators (BOSA). Total hours include two days of in-person class, three FEMA independent study course, and two elective experiences.

School resource officer (SRO) training

The SRO training courses are offered annually in a Basic and Advanced format. The courses are offered in varying locations across the state to add accessibility for all SROs to participate.
