Missing and Murdered African American Women Task Force
The Missing and Murdered African American Women Task Force (MMAAW) was created during the 2021 legislative session as a first-in-the-nation initiative. It was tasked to examine and report on:
- Systemic causes of violence against African American women and girls.
- Appropriate methods of tracking and collecting data.
- Policies, practices and institutions that impact violence against African American women and girls.
- Measures necessary to address and reduce violence against African American women and girls.
- Measures necessary to help victims, their families and their communities.
Task force role
The role of the task force was to:
- Advise the commissioner of the Department of Public Safety on the issue of MMAAW.
- Report to the Legislature on recommendations to reduce and end violence against African American women and girls in Minnesota.
- Serve as a liaison between the commissioner and agencies and organizations that provide legal, social and other community services to victims, victims' families and victims' communities.
Report to the Legislature
The report was completed in December 2022 and submitted to the Minnesota Legislature during the 2023 legislative session.
