Motorcycle endorsement for active military duty
Can I add a motorcycle endorsement while on active duty?
Yes, if you are currently on active duty, you may be eligible to add a motorcycle endorsement to your Minnesota driver’s license. Make sure you keep your license valid.
You must provide proof of passing the motorcycle written test:
- Provide a current Minnesota motorcycle instruction permit or one that is expired less than one year – or
- Complete a motorcycle written test provided by a Minnesota DVS exam station, while you are here on leave – or
- Show proof of passing an equivalent knowledge test in your temporary state of residence. This does not include any test given at the end of a motorcycle course (such as Basic Rider Course) in that state, the test must be taken at an exam station, and you must provide proof of passing to Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS).
This proof must include:
A letter of completion on letterhead paper from the motorcycle course provider indicating:
- The date you passed the road test.
- The type of road test administered (MOST, ALT-MOST, BRC, RSS).
What if I am not in Minnesota and want to add the motorcycle endorsement?
You can add the motorcycle endorsement if you are not in Minnesota by completing an out-of-state packet.
To add the motorcycle endorsement:
- Request an out-of-state packet via email at DVS.driverslicense@state.mn.us or by calling 651-297-3298.
- Let the agent know you are active-duty military and adding a motorcycle endorsement.
- Complete the out-of-state packet. This includes:
- Application, notarized by an official notary.
- Proof of passing written and road tests (as described above on this page).
- Vision report (if renewing).
- Include appropriate fees for a duplicate or renewal license fee. Fees vary based on the type of card.
- Additional $29 if no Minnesota motorcycle permit is on file.
- Money orders or checks made out to DVS.
- No starter checks will be accepted.
- Do not send cash.
Allow six weeks to get your new card. You can get your card faster by paying an additional $20 fee. Include a separate check for the $20 fast track fee payable to DVS when you mail the application.
