Class D driver's license for active military duty
Thank you for your service.
As an active duty U.S. military service member who had a valid, unexpired Minnesota driver's license when you entered active service, you do not need to renew your license until you separate, no matter how long you serve. This law also applies to your spouse and dependents stationed with you. You do not need to apply for a license in the state you are stationed in unless you plan to change your residency to that state.
You may choose to renew your driver’s license while on active duty. You can renew or apply for a duplicate driver's license by completing an out of state packet if you are living out of state.
To receive the packet contact Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS):
- Call 651-297-3298.
- Email: dvs.driverslicense@state.mn.us (include your full name, date of birth and mailing address).
Note:
For renewals: standard or REAL ID applications are considered.
For duplicates: standard, REAL ID and enhanced applications are considered.
Follow the instructions in the packet and make sure you meet all requirements on the checklist.
You will not need to test to renew your Minnesota driver’s license if you return and apply within one year of separation. Bring your separation papers with you to apply.
You will have to retake the knowledge test if it has been more than one year since your separation.
You will have to retake the road test if it has been more than five years since your separation.
