When do I renew my driver’s license or ID card?
Driver’s licenses expire on a person’s birthday, unless you have a provisional license (Review the rules for new drivers under age 18 here). To make sure you can still legally drive, renew your driver’s license on or before the expiration date.
The expiration date depends on which kind of card you have.
Standard
- Driver’s licenses and identification (ID) cards (21 years and older): four years.
- Under 21 years old: expires on your 21st birthday. Wait to renew your license or ID until no more than 60 days before your 21st birthday.
- 65 years and older ID cards only: no expiration date.
- Instruction permits: two years from the date of application.
- Provisional driver’s licenses: two years from the date of application.
REAL ID
- Same as for standard, except:
- 65 years and older ID cards only: eight years.
Enhanced
- Same as for standard, except:
- 65 years and older ID cards only: four years.
What do I need to bring with me to renew my driver’s license or ID card?
- Your previous Minnesota driver’s license or ID card.
- Proof of residence if your address has changed and you have a Real ID or enhanced card.
- Proof of name change if your name has changed since your last renewal. You must have changed your name with the Social Security Administration first.
- Know your Social Security number.
- Payment for your card: cash, check or money order. Some locations take credit cards, and some additional fees may apply.
- Be prepared to pay any fees you might owe. Check the status of your license before you go.
I already applied, where's my license?
After you apply, you can check to see if your license has been printed and mailed. You'll need your driver's license or ID card number.
How do I renew my commercial driver’s license (CDL)?
The process to renew your CDL is the same as a Class D license. The only difference is you’ll have to retake your school bus or Hazardous Materials written tests with each renewal. You will also have to provide a medical certification each renewal.
Review the Minnesota Commercial Driver's License Manual.
