Tax exempt license plates
Local
Tax exempt local plates can only be displayed on vehicles that are owned by any political subdivision, licensed ambulance services, and non-profit charities. The vehicles must be used exclusively:
- To transport disabled persons for educational, charitable, and religious purposes, or for disaster response and related activities
- In driver's education programs at non-public schools, licensed commercial driving schools
- By an educational institution in transporting pupils to and from the institution
State
Tax exempt state license plates are for vehicles owned by a state agency and must display agency’s name on both front doors. State Agency vehicles are tax exempt as defined in in Minnesota Statute 168.012. These plates are permanent non-expiring and may use different letter prefix for different departments.
