Local tax exempt license plates
Tax exempt local plates can only be displayed on vehicles that are owned by any political subdivision, licensed ambulance services, and non-profit charities. The vehicles must be used exclusively:
- To transport disabled persons for educational, charitable, and religious purposes, or for disaster response and related activities
- In driver's education programs at non-public schools, licensed commercial driving schools
- By an educational institution in transporting pupils to and from the institution
The requirements are laid out in in Minnesota Statute 168.012.In addition, these vehicles must display the organization or jurisdiction’s name on both sides except County Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Workers. The registration expiration is biennially and ends February of even years.

Trailer Plates: $8.50
The plate fee is due in addition to all other applicable fees.
