Vehicle wheelage tax
A wheelage tax is a minimum $10 tax that can be increased to a maximum of $20.
The wheelage tax is due at the time of vehicle registration. If it is paid and the vehicle is then moved to another county, the tax is not refunded.
The tax is levied by the county board of commissioners on vehicles kept in the county when they are not in operation and subject to annual registration and taxation.
Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) collects wheelage tax on behalf of participating counties. Funds are distributed to the county and used for transportation needs, including highway preservation, expansion and transit improvement projects.
Exemptions
Wheelage tax does not apply to vehicles that do not require an annual registration tax. The following vehicles are also exempt:
- Motorcycles.
- Motorized bicycles.
- Trailers.
