Learn about different driver's license and ID card types and how to apply for them.

Driver's license and ID card information

A driver's license is required to operate a vehicle in Minnesota. The most common type of license is a Class D, which is a regular driver's license and is required to operate a vehicle weighing 26,000 pounds or less.  Class D includes REAL ID and Enhanced driver's licenses.

To get a driver's license, you must meet the criteria and pass both a written and a road test. You do not need to take a test to get an ID card.
