Formal Request for Data

The Minnesota Government Data Practices Act gives members of the public the right to see and/or have copies of public data that the Department of Public Safety (DPS) keeps. The law also controls how we keep government data and what we tell you when you ask to see the data that we have.

If it is not possible to give you the information in the format requested, we will contact you to discuss alternatives to provide you the information you have requested.

Please follow these agency specific instructions to request data:

  • Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA): Data requests must be submitted in writing by using the BCA data request form.

  • Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS): If you are requesting driver and vehicle information (such as information on your driving record, title documents and other data), contact the Records Unit at (651) 296-2940. Requests for Minnesota crash report records can be submitted by using the Minnesota Crash Record request form. A legible copy of a government issued identification card or notarized signature must accompany your request.

  • Minnesota State Patrol (MSP): Body worn camera (BWC) requests can be submitted in person with proper government issued identification or in writing by submitting a notarized MSP BWC request form.
