Suspect Identified in Midway Township Officer Involved Shooting

The suspect involved in last week’s officer involved shooting in Midway Township in rural St. Louis County has been identified. Kristen Kelly Johnson, 48, of Cloquet, is hospitalized at Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating the officer involved shooting at the request of the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office is investigating Johnson’s actions at the scene.

Shortly before 11 p.m. on Thursday, February 11, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call of a suicidal woman with a firearm at Augustana Lutheran Church, 3169 Midway Road in Midway Township. Deputies located the woman, now identified as Johnson, seated in her vehicle in the church parking lot. Deputies requested backup, and personnel from the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office, Hermantown, Proctor and Duluth police departments, the Minnesota State Patrol, Gold Cross Ambulance, Midway Township First Responders and the St. Louis County Rescue Squad arrived.

A standoff with Johnson lasted more than an hour, during which Johnson exited her vehicle and threatened law enforcement officers with the firearm. Two officers discharged their weapons, striking Johnson. Johnson was taken by Gold Cross Ambulance to Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center.

The Hermantown Police Department officer and Minnesota State Trooper who fired their weapons during the incident will be identified tomorrow once both have been interviewed by the BCA. Both are on standard administrative leave.

When the BCA’s investigation into the incident is complete, the BCA will turn its findings over to the St. Louis County Attorney’s Office for review.
