Update on BCA Investigation of Minneapolis Officer Involved Shooting

​ST. PAUL — The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has identified the officers who discharged their weapons during a Jan. 14, 2021, officer involved shooting incident in Minneapolis.

  • Officer Felix Alvarado has been with the Minneapolis Police Department for four years. He discharged his firearm.
  • Officer Cory Krautkramer has been with the department for seven years. He discharged his firearm.
  • Officer Aaron Pearson has been with the department for seven years. He fired less lethal impact rounds.
  • Officer Kyle Pond has been with the department for seven years. He discharged his firearm.
  • Officer Nathan Sundberg has been with the department for seven years. He fired less lethal impact rounds.

All shooting officers have declined in-person interviews by BCA agents at this time. Officers Alvarado, Krautkramer and Pond provided written statements through their attorney. They are on standard administrative leave.

Zedrick Andrew Cooper, 36, of Minneapolis, was injured during the incident. Cooper was treated at North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale for non-life threatening gunshot injuries and released. Cooper was charged in Hennepin County District Court on Jan. 15 with three counts of first degree assault and one count of possession of a firearm by an ineligible person. He is currently in the Hennepin County Jail. Further details of the incident are available in the criminal complaint.

The incident was captured on body cameras. BCA agents will review dash camera footage to determine whether they captured the incident. BCA crime scene personnel recovered a handgun and ammunition from inside Cooper’s vehicle.

The BCA investigation of the officer involved shooting incident is active and ongoing. When the investigation is complete, the BCA will provide its findings without recommendation to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office for review.
