The trace section also analyzes a variety of other things.  These types of exams could include white powders not containing drugs, red phosphorous and iodine, glitter, metals, feathers, acrylic nails, etc.

The trace section has a variety of different instruments and techniques that could be utilized when examining miscellaneous materials including but not limited to:  stereomicroscope, polarizing microscope, comparison microscope, fluorescence microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM) with Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), melting point apparatus, pyrolysis gas chromatograph (PGC), gas chromatograph with mass spectrometer (GC-MS), chemical tests and microspectrophotometer (MSP).
