Name Change
If you are changing your name, you must renew your registration in person. You will need to provide a certified marriage certificate, a certified divorce or dissolution of marriage decree specifying the name change or other certified court order specifying the name change. You are also required to change your driver's license within 30 days of legally changing your name or address (refer to the Driver's License steps, select your class and you can find more information about changing your name and/or address on your driver’s license).
Registration Exemption for Active Duty Military Personnel
Reference: Minnesota Statutes, section 168.031
All motor vehicles, as defined in Minn. Stat. 168.002, registered in Minnesota to any person in active military service, located/based outside Minnesota, is exempt from registration tax while in active service and for 90 days after completion of active service. All other associated fees still apply (replacement plate fee, contributions, tech surcharge, filing fee).
Active Duty Military Personnel must follow the steps listed below in order to claim vehicle registration exemption:
- Active Duty personnel must be vehicle owner or co-owner
- Vehicle must be located or based out-of-state or overseas
- Cannot be operated on a public highway within the state unless on furlough or leave
- Provide a copy of military orders or letterhead from base commander, identifying dates of active duty
