Disaster and emergency planning is not the responsibility of one agency. Communities and businesses along with families and individuals need to plan and prepare to minimize the effects of a disaster.
The pages in this section offer information about state emergency planning and preparedness programs as well as resources to help citizens, organizations, businesses and communities become better prepared to avoid and overcome the effects of a disaster.
Disaster preparedness by individuals, businesses and communities can go a long way toward minimizing and surviving the effects of natural disasters or other incidents. HSEM All-Hazards Planning
HSEM All-Hazards Planning coordinates state level emergency planning along with providing guidance to local governments for writing and updating local emergency plans. Additionally, the HSEM All-Hazard planning staff develops the Minnesota Emergency Operations Plan (MEOP) and ensures that all state level plans and local guidance are in compliance with federal regulations.
HSEM Radiological Emergency Preparedness (REP)
The HSEM REP program ensures that the health and safety of the public is protected in the event of a radiological incident at either the Monticello or Prairie Island nuclear generating plants. Through this program the state conducts bi-annual exercises in cooperation with the plant operators and various state agencies to enhance, improve and refine coordinated emergency response efforts.
Minnesota School Safety Center (MnSSC)
HSEM provides school emergency planning, guidance and information to help schools develop comprehensive emergency plans, policies and procedures to ensure the safety and security of all students.
Weather Safety
The Weather Safety section provides
weather hazard awareness and preparedness information from the National Weather Service about the most common types of weather safety threats in Minnesota – in both summer and winter. It also has information about the annual Minnesota Severe Weather Awareness Week and Winter Hazard Awareness Week education programs.
