Qualifications

To qualify for disability license plates, the applicant must be the owner (or primary operator if the vehicle is owned by a business) of the vehicle on which the license plates will be displayed, or is the custodial parent or guardian of a permanently disabled minor, or is the owner of a commercial rental motor vehicle that has been specially modified for and is used exclusively by permanently physically disabled people.​

Display

A person may display Disability plates on passenger class vehicles (cars, vans, pickups), self-propelled recreational vehicles (RV), one-ton pickups and motorcycles. More than one set of disability plates may be issued. However, a questionnaire, developed by the Minnesota Council on Disability, must be completed by the applicant and be submitted with the application for the second set of license plates (Motorcycles as the second vehicle are automatically approved).

Specialized Plates for Disability

Most Special Plates are available with a disability emblem, including: Collegiate, Critical Habitat (DNR), Firefighter, Support Our Troops, Remembering Victims of Impaired Drivers, Veteran Service Organizations, Ex-POW, all Veteran Plates.

License Plate Transfer

Plates may be transferred to another vehicle of the same type owned by the plate applicant - there is no fee due to transfer disability plates.
