Monthly Preliminary Fatal Crash Numbers

September 2021 Preliminary Fatal Crash and Fatality Numbers

  • There were 45 fatal crashes in September, compared with 45 last year.
  • There were 48 fatalities in September, compared with 47 last year.
  • Of the 48 fatalities:
    • Five person died in distracted driving-related crashes.    
    • 10 people died in speed-related crashes.        
    • Six people died in an alcohol-related crash.                  
    • 11 people died who were unbelted.         
    • 36 were men, 10 were women and two were not reported.
    • Five were a pedestrians.             
    • One were bicyclists.​
    • Eight were motorcyclists.   
  • 2,152 motorists were arrested for DWI in September, compared with 2,171 in September 2020.

Year-to-date Fatalities (January-September 2021)  

  • Preliminary numbers show 332 traffic crashes in 2021, compared with 279 last year. 
  • 360 people were killed in traffic crashes in 2021, compared with 296 in 2020.  
  • Of the 360 fatalities:
    • 16 people died in distracted driving-related crashes.               
    • 120 people died in speed-related crashes.         
    • 88 people died in alcohol-related crashes.                                   .                                                             .                              
    • 76 people died who were unbelted.                  
    • 266 were men, 92 were women and two were not reported.
    • 38 were pedestrians.    
    • Seven were bicyclists.
    • 58 were a motorcyclists.                    
  • 18,382 motorists were arrested for DWI in 2021, compared with 17,601 in 2020.
