2012 saw extensive floods in northeast and central Minnesota while severe storms that included 37 tornadoes affected many communities across the state. 

Across the country, major weather events such as hurricane Sandy affected millions of people with floods, destruction and extensive power outages.

While we can’t prevent severe weather, there are some simple steps everyone can take to stay safe and protect themselves and their homes whenever severe storms, tornadoes, flooding, or even extreme heat threatens.

The pages in this section offer some basic awareness information and safety tips about the most common spring and summer weather hazards. They also provide resources to minimize risks. Using this site as a guide, learn to make a plan, build an emergency kit, and stay informed.
