Capitol Security

​​​Capitol Security and Executive Protection provide safety and security to executive, judicial and legislative officials, state employees and members of the public on the Minnesota State Capitol complex. Capitol Security is the primary responder to all emergencies and events at the State Capitol complex. The division is supervised by a State Patrol captain and two lieutenants.

Executive Protection Unit

The Executive Protection Unit is responsible for protecting the governor, lieutenant governor and their staff. These troopers are also responsible for security at the Governor's Residence, located on Summit Avenue in St. Paul. Additionally, they are responsible for the governor's primary residence if different than the Summit Avenue home.

Capitol Security Division

The current staff include one captain, two lieutenants, 12 troopers, 44 security officers, six security/communication systems monitors and eight security sergeants. They are responsible for the safety and security of 20 state buildings, 24 parking facilities, eight memorials, six parks and open malls, more than 15,000 employees who work on the Capitol complex, and thousands of guests and customers who visit the complex daily.

Operations Center

The Capitol Security Operations Center is the central hub for the operation of the state buildings and all emergencies that occur within its jurisdiction. There are more than 100,000 environmental and security points regulated by the Operations Center staff. The Operations Center monitors more than 900 cameras and 300 intercoms located throughout the Capitol complex in high-security and public areas.

Event Security

Each year there are more than 700 events held on the State Capitol complex. These events are scheduled via permit through the Department of Administration. Capitol Security is responsible for safety, security and law enforcement at these events. The size of these events has ranged from a single demonstrator to thousands of people.
