The data below shows the yearly total number of crashes Minnesota State Patrol troopers responded to across all patrol districts.
Crash Reconstruction
The major crash reconstruction unit is staffed by five troopers whose full-time duty is to investigate serious and fatal motor vehicle crashes. Most of their caseload is in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, but they do respond occasionally to crashes in other parts of the state as the need arises. In greater Minnesota, 35 crash reconstruction specialists conduct reconstruction duties on a part-time basis and fulfill regular trooper duties as their primary job.
Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs)
In 2022, the state patrol purchased UASs specifically for reconstructing crash scenes. Drones can quickly collect evidence and help clear the roads faster, which means fewer secondary crashes. They also provide superior evidence collection abilities. UAS deployments are reported to the BCA yearly.
